Helen stood in the doorway between the dining room and the den while she watched Peter’s head bounced from one side to the other. She knew that anyone watching, would think that he was listening to some internal ear worm like...
'hey there little red riding hood you sure are looking good. Your everything a big bad wolf could want. OOOOOOoooooo'.
And if the truth be known, she was ready for him to be the Big Bad Wolf to her Little Red Riding Hood, this afternoon.
But she knew from the scowl on his face that he was really listening to the debate being waged by the mini-me's on his shoulders. Some would call the mini-me's the angel and the devil, or nice and naughty. But she called Peter's mini-me's Goofus and Gallant from that cartoon in Highlights for children. She decided that if she wanted to enjoy other pursuits this afternoon, she had better put a stop to whatever foolishness he was dreaming up.
"Peter... I'll give you a penny for those thoughts. That is, unless you can convince me that they are worth more. " she said.
Peter jumped. 'Hang it all," he thought "he hadn't even known that she was around.'
"Now Helen, I know you believe that we shouldn't interfere. But for all that Trixie is a tomboy and hates dressing up and cooking and stuff, she can also be very traditional. You know that. So even though you believe that we should stay out of their marriage, we have to give Jim a heads up about the 1st anniversary gift being paper and the Johnson family tradition of it being something can be displayed in the first home.“
Peter took a deep breath and continued,
“Brian has your artistic ability, so when he celebrates his first anniversary with Honey, he will probably draw a human heart and write a poem about how he will love her as long as there are heartbeats.
"And Mart! He is just as likely to find the biggest dictionary he can find, and underline or highlight all the words and synonyms for love and, and...“ Peter cleared his throat, “and other powerful if a little bit risque' words.
"But Jim! He is more likely than not, to go out and buy a piece of beautiful jewelry that has no meaning to the 1st anniversary at all. You know I am right.”
Helen sighed. 'Darn it, she was going to have to admit that she herself ignored her own rule, and interfered.' She walked over to Peter, and sat in his lap.
“Peter, I gave Jim a heads up last month when he and I were planning Honey’s birthday party. I showed him the paper coasters that you gave me from all the places we visited on our honeymoon, and the set of paintings that I did on the art paper that you gave me. I also told him about my great grandparents love letters to each other and how they were mounted in such a way that the average viewer wasn’t aware of some of the more intense sentiments. Don’t worry Peter, when Jim left here that day, it looked like he already had about a dozen good ideas to put into action.”
Helen purred, “Now speaking of action, all the kids are gone, so lets go upstairs and play Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.”
